Updated Mapping Features for Better Looking Maps

Curved labeling & User control over curved labeling overhang

By having a setting to automatically try several locations to best place labels around points and centroids means users will get more descriptive maps without spending a long time positioning labels by hand. Users also get control over curved labeling overhang which is useful in situations where a street name that runs longer than the street section.  More control means producing clearer maps in less time.

Extended formats for custom symbol support

One of the ways maps can be easy to read is by placing symbols that the target audiences can intuitively understand. The challenge sometimes is that these symbols can be in any of the common formats such as JPG, GIF, PNG, TIF etc. By extending the format support, we ensure that whatever the custom symbol format, MapInfo Professional will be able to display it on the map.

Vector & Label translucency

Translucent map objects help you focus-on a specific area by deemphasizing focus on other areas.  The capability also can be used as a way to illuminate a section of a map and make it stand out.  You can think about this capability as a virtual highlighter tool.

Anti-aliasing smoothes lines and region borders which increases clarity so your maps look professional and finished. By having professional looking maps, your colleagues can focus more on the information you are trying to convey and therefore benefit from the power of location quicker.

Productivity Enhancements in version 9.5

  • Access layer operations from the right click menu

  • Sub categorize your custom symbols – your way

  • Pick the same color, line or pattern each time, every time

  • Enhanced Named Views Utility

  • Workgroup deployment

Access layer operations from the right click menu

The ability to use a right click menu to quickly access common layer operations was added. For example: you can now click on any object on the map and quickly select all objects in that layer, view the entire layer or make that layer editable. Furthermore, finding that layer in the layer control has become easier because the selected layer will be clearly marked

Sub categorize your custom symbols

You can now sub-categorize your custom symbols in separate folders. This option allows you to better manage and categorize your symbols for easy finding and retrieval in future.

Pick the same color, line or pattern each time, every time

Ability to clearly communicate line type, color, fill pattern or a specific symbol from a symbol set is now easier than ever. MapInfo Professional now includes a grid control which assigns a name to each of the line styles, color pallets, fill-patterns and symbols. The naming allows for more effective communication and documentation of maps.

Enhanced Named Views

Utility Named views utility allows users to set defined views (i.e. set zoom and center) and give them a name of their choice. The utility saves time by allowing users to quickly zoom to defined locations without repeated map zooms and pans. The enhanced utility has several benefits that include the ability to sub-categorize the view names, drag them from one category to another, rename them in place or collapse specific views and expand others to quickly switching from one view to another. The utility also supports the ability to share the named views file among users.

Workgroup deployment

Customers that use multiple seats of MapInfo Professional can now use the new workgroup deployment option. Using this option, you can share your MapInfo customizable files such as custom symbols and thematic templates with others. The sharing of these files means that map produced by one user with custom symbols will look the same on all systems. In addition, Layout and Thematic templates can also be shared which means, any template created by one user can be used by the group.
