 PCensus Home

SF1 (Summary File 1) contains the 100-percent data, which is the information compiled from the questions asked of all people and about every housing unit in the United States. Population items include sex, age, race Hispanic or Latino, household relationship and group quarters. Housing items include occupancy status, vacancy status and tenure (owner occupied or renter occupied).

SF1 Data has 3,000 variables, in hierarchical sequence, down to the Block Group level. SF1 includes:

population and housing characteristics for the total population, population totals for an extensive list of race (American Indian and Alaska Native tribes, Asian and Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander) and Hispanic or Latino groups, and population and housing characteristics for a limited list of race and Hispanic or Latino groups. Selected aggregates and medians also are provided.

1990 to 2000 Trends are supplied for the following variables: Population, Population by Race, Households, Housing Units by Type (Owned, Rented and Vacant), Persons in Households and Single Parent Households.

To assist the PCensus user in dealing with about 3,000 variables, SF1 data has two PCensus templates:

• 2000 SF1 “Standard” template - the most popular variables are compiled into 21 tables. Click here to see these variables. (PDF)

• 2000 SF1 “Detailed” template - the U.S. Census Bureau has released SF1 as 227 tables: 171 Population tables (identified with a “P”); 56 housing tables (identified with an “H”). Click here to see these tables. (PDF)

2000 Census ( Summary File 1) SF1 CT Data

SF1-CT Data has 5,000 variables, in hierarchical sequence, down to the Census Tract level.

SF1-CT Data includes population characteristics for the total population, population totals for an extensive list of race (American Indian and Alaska Native tribes, Asian and Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander) and Hispanic or Latino groups, and population characteristics for a limited list of race and Hispanic or Latino groups.

Note – SF1-CT Data also includes the variables that are contained in the SF1 Data.

To help you to understand and use the 2000 Census SF1 Data, we are supplying reference material prepared by the U.S. Census Bureau: “Summary File 1, 2000 Census, Technical Documentation”, May 2001. This document is supplied on a CD-ROM as a .PDF file. 

The publication, with 606 pages, contains complete background material on the 2000 Census including collection and processing procedures, variable name and definitions, geographic terms and concepts and the actual Census Questionnaire.
