2006 Census of Canada

The census was conducted in May 2006.  The PCensus database will contain census variables for:

  • Age and Sex
  • Marital Status, Families, Households and Dwelling Characteristics
  • Language, Mobility, Migration, Immigration and Citizenship
  • Aboriginal Population
  • Labour, Place of Work and Education
  • Ethnic origin and visible minorities
  • Income and earnings, Housing and shelter costs

Age, sex and marital status counts are based on data collected from 100% of households.  All other variables are based on a 20% sample of households.

All variables except population and dwelling counts are subjected to random rounding, applied by Statistics Canada to protect confidentiality.  Where applicable, PCensus databases contain values imputed from higher geography levels to supplement data suppressed in dissemination areas with small populations.

Reference maps show the location of geographic areas for which census data are tabulated and disseminated.  The maps display the boundaries, names and codes of standard geographic areas, as well as major cultural and physical features such as roads, railroads, coastlines, rivers and lakes.  These can be viewed as pdf images on Statistics Canada web site at:
