April 2001 - Using PCensus, the development staff of TETRAD Computer Applications have analyzed the newly released 2000 Census Data to reveal some interesting racial patterns. Applying Targeting to the percentage of population by race in counties shows that Queens, New York is the Melting-Pot County in America. 

PCensus is a demographic analysis package that lets the user describe a profile based on census variables (race, income, etc.), and set threshold values on key demographics. PCensus finds and ranks all the areas in the country that meet the demographic profile. In the first trial of the 2000 Census Redistricting data, the percentage of population by race, in all counties with 10,000+ population, were analyzed. 

“We asked PCensus to find all the counties where the percentage of Black, White and Asian races and Hispanics were at least 18% of the total population”, said Wilson Baker, Tetrad’s President. “Within seconds the results showed Queens County with 33% White, 19% Black, 18% Asian and 25% Hispanic”, said Baker. “Alameda County, California came next but did not make the cutoff having only 13% Asians”.

“Next we asked PCensus to find all the counties where the percentage of both White and Black races was at least 49%. The results were displayed as St. James Parish and Iberville Parish in Louisiana. Replacing the Black race with Hispanic, the same question was posed and the results ranked Grant County, New Mexico and Parmer County, Texas as having at least 49% White and Hispanic”.

In a similar manner, PCensus found Santa Clara and San Francisco Counties in California with the highest percentage of White and Asians (greater than 30%). Also Bronx County in New York ranked first for Blacks and Hispanics. PCensus generally found that counties with a high percentage of Asians also had a high percentage of Whites. 

Clearly such results are critical for marketing goods or delivering community services to a geographical area. PCensus could just have easily found the highest-ranking census tract, block group or Zip code that matched a user defined Profile.
